Dit is het resultaat van de eerste muurschildering als onderdeel van de 'Panacea' residentie van het muralistencollectief NUMU uit Ecuador. Als onderdeel van ons programma 'Art(e) for Community Building'

Er bestaat een lijn die de geschiedenis en sociale problemen van zowel Ecuador als Antwerpen doorkruist.
De inheemse volken van de Ecuadoraanse Amazone hebben in het verleden een dynamiek opgezet van tarieven, waarbij ze betalingen oplegden aan derden om hen toegang te verlenen tot de natuurlijke rijkdommen uit de Ecuadoraanse Amazone.
De druk van multinationale bedrijven om petroleum te ontginnen in voor de inheemse bevolking beschermde gebieden, leidde tot de gewoonte om als betaling cadeaus te ontvangen van de “moderne wereld”. Dit was zonder rekening te houden met de lange termijn impact: beschadiging en vernietiging van de natuur. In Antwerpen vertelt de legende dat de stad ingenomen was door een reus die geld eiste van de reizigers. De reus hakte de hand af van wie weigerde te betalen.

Deze muurschildering beoogt om twee lokale realiteiten vanuit het globale perspectief te begrijpen. De realiteiten hebben gelijkenis in de strijd voor het recht op grond, de ontginning hiervan en de vraag van toebehoren.
De dimensie van een muurschildering laat uitwisselingen zonder geografische grenzen toe en vergroot de zichtbaarheid. De vraag die achterblijft: Van wie is het land?

There is a line that crosses the history and social problems of both Ecuador and Antwerp.
The indigenous peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon have historically set up a dynamic of fees, imposing payments on third parties to allow them access to the natural resources of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Pressure from multinational companies to extract petroleum in areas protected for indigenous people led to the custom of receiving gifts from the “modern world” as payment. This was without considering the long-term impact: damage and destruction of nature. In Antwerp, the legend tells that the city was taken by a giant who demanded money from the travellers. The giant cut off the hand of those who refused to pay.

This mural aims to understand two local realities from the global perspective. The realities are similar in the struggle for the right to land, its cultivation and the question of belonging.
The dimension of a mural allows exchanges without geographical boundaries and increases visibility. The question that remains: Who owns the land?
